JOHN ZURIER HÁDEGISFYRIRLESTUR Í MYNDLISTARDEILD
Föstudaginn 30. október kl. 13 heldur myndlistarmaðurinn John Zurier opinn fyrirlestur um verk sín og vinnuaðferðir í fyrirlestrarsal myndlistardeildar að Laugarnesvegi 91.
John Zurier (1956) býr og starfar í Berkeley, Kaliforníu. Hann lauk BA gráðu í landslagsarkitektúr og MFA í málun frá háskólanum í Kaliforníu, Berkeley. Verk hans hafa verið sýnd víða bæði í Bandaríkjunum og Evrópu og eiga fjölmörg stærri söfn verk eftir Zurier m.a. Moderna Museet, Stockholm og San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Zurier var prófessor í málun hjá San Francisco Art Institute, Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley og frá 2005 – 2014 var hann heiðursprófessor hjá California College of the Arts, San Francisco.
Í erindi sínu mun John Zurier veita innsýn í verk sín og vinnuaðferðir ásamt því að fjalla nánar um nokkur verk sem hann hefur unnið að á undanförnum tveimur árum þegar hann hefur dvalið á Íslandi. Nú stendur yfir sýning á vatnslitamyndum Zurier í Gallerí Gangi og mun hann einnig opna sýningu með Hreini Friðfinnssyni í Listasafni ASÍ á næsta ári.
Síðustu einkasýningar Zurier hafa verið í Gallery Paule Anglin (San Francisco 2013), Gallery Peter Blum (New York, 2013), Galerie Nordenhake (Berlin, 2013), Lawrence Markey Gallery (San Antonio 2014), Berkeley Art Museum og Pacific Film Archive (2014).

Opnir fyrirlestrar í myndlistardeild
Á ári hverju heldur fjöldi lista- og fræðimanna erindi um verk sín og hugmyndir á fyrirlestrum í myndlistardeild. Fyrirlestrarnir eru opnir almenningi og er ætlað að kynna margþætt viðfangsefni úr heimi lista og samtímamenningar og hvetja til umræðu um þau. Fyrirlestrarnir eru mikilvægur þáttur í starfsemi deildarinnar og eru ætlaðir til að efla tengsl milli nemenda og starfandi lista- og fræðimanna.
Fyrirlestrar í myndlistardeild fara fram í fyrirlestrarsalnum að Laugarnesvegi 91. Þeir eru opnir almenningi og er aðgangur ókeypis.

JOHN ZURIER OPEN LECTURE AT THE DEPARTMENT OF FINE ART
On Friday the 30th of October at 1 pm an open lecture by the artist John Zurier will be held at the Department of Fine Art, Laugarnesvegur 91.
John Zurier (1956) is a painter that lives and works in Berkeley, California. He received his BA degree in Landscape Architecture and an MFA in Painting from the University of California, Berkeley. His work has been exhibited widely in solo-exhibitions both in the US as well as Europe and is part of numerous public collections such as Moderna Museet, Stockholm and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He was a professor of painting at the San Francisco Art Institute, Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, and from 2005 – 2014 he was Distinguished Professor at the California College of the Arts, San Francisco. He participated in the 30th São Paulo Biennial (2012), the California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art (2010), the 7th Gwangju Biennial, South Korea (2008) and the Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art (2002). He received a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 2010. Currently, he has an exhibition of watercolors at Gallerí Gangur in Reykjavík and in May 2016 he will be exhibiting with Hreinn Fridfinsson at Listasafn ASÍ.
For the last five years Zurier has been coming to Iceland twice a year in summer and winter. In his lecture Zurier will show slides and talk about his work and about his experience painting in Iceland.
Zurier’s is one of California’s leading painters. His spare, nuanced, near-monochrome abstractions are celebrated for seeming at once ethereal and stark, lyrical and resolute. Zurier’s subject is color, material, and the delicate balance between surface modulation and spatial depth. He often uses distemper, an old form of tempera paint made from dry pigments in animal glue on linen to create a dry atmospheric light. Sometimes the color is layered so thinly that it can appear barely there. Or it can appear breathed or willed into place with an atmosphere that seems to hover below the limit of visibility and language. He has said that his paintings are about “light and lightness, movement, air, and the feeling of emptiness, effortlessness and simplicity.” Although the paintings have landscape references they are not descriptions, and the work remains unmistakably abstract.
