Artists from Iceland participating in Liechtenstein’s first presence at the Venice Biennale.

At the end of October, the Principality of Liechtenstein will for the first time officially participate in the international art exhibition “La Biennale di Venezia”. Icelandic artists Gabríela Friðriksdóttir, Gunnhildur Hauksdóttir and Anna Fríða Jónsdóttir are also taking part in the tenday “Collateral Event”.
Entitled “The Silver Lining”, Liechtenstein’s exhibit runs from 23 October to 1 November 2015 and shows contemporary art from Liechtenstein and other European small states. The exhibition is housed in the Palazzo Trevisan degli Ulivi courtesy of the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, also home to the Salon Suisse. Liechtenstein’s first official appearance at the art biennial in Venice, one of the most important art events in the world, is curated by the art association Kunstverein Schichtwechsel (Laura Hilti, Luis Hilti, Annett Höland and Flurina Seger), while the project is managed by Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein.
With the objective of allowing a critical comparison between different countries and opening up a field of dialogue and collaboration, Kunstverein Schichtwechsel has invited young artists from Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Iceland and Montenegro to take part. The following artists will feature at the Biennale: Beate Frommelt and Anna Hilti from Liechtenstein; Adrijana Gvozdenović and Natalija Vujošević from Montenegro; Karolina Markiewicz and Pascal Piron from Luxembourg as well as Gabríela Friðriksdóttir, Gunnhildur Hauksdóttir and Anna Fríða Jónsdóttir from Iceland.

The exhibition’s starting point is Walter Benjamin’s text, „On The Concept of History“, in which he describes the history of humanity as a „chain of events“, events which retrospectively take on the appearance of a single catastrophe. His sombre view of the world is challenged by alternative views on events by young artists – events which have inspired them and have positively shaped their lives and the lives of those around them. A particular focus is the influence of coming from or living in a small country.

The artists are on site for the duration of the ten-day Collateral Event and will present their artistic practice within a programme involving round tables, performances and other activities.

The opening of „The Silver Lining“ will take place on Friday, 23 October 2015, from 6pm.
