BLINDHÆÐ

Laugardagur 13. mars 2021 – Sunnudagur 11. apríl 2021
Opnun: 13. mars 2021, kl. 17:00, Borgarbókasafnið Grófinni (Tryggvagata 15)

(Press release in english attached below)

Samsýningin Blindhæð opnar 13. mars samfara Evrópuviku gegn kynþáttamisrétti. Listræn stjórnun sýningarinnar er í höndum Daríu Sól Andrews (IS).

BLINDSPOT

EXHIBITION OPENING: 13th March at 17:00 | Reykjavik City Library Grófin (Tryggvagata 15)

The group exhibition Blindspot opens on March 13th in conjunction with the European Action Week Against Racism. Blindspot curated by Daría Sól Andrews (IS), is a exhibition series in which the artists´ work will be experienced at various library locations. It presents film, photography, and installation work by Salad Hilowle (SE), Nayab Ikram (FI), Hugo Llanes (IS) and Claire Paugam (IS).

“The works in this exhibition explore a personal angle on racism and exclusion within a European and Scandinavian context. The artists in this exhibition offer a unique perspective on their lived experiences as well as a place of confrontation, a potential to shift our viewpoints. Microaggressions, cultural exclusion, gender inequality, and systemic racism are conversations that are uncomfortable, avoided, overlooked; we place these confronting realities in a personal blindspot. And yet, the simple fact is that systemic racism and gender biases are all too present in our institutions, in our everyday relations, and in our implicit, unconscious gestures. This exhibition and the European Action Week Against Racism is therefore an opportunity for us as a community to come together and acknowledge the spaces in which we need to represent and protect our minority groups. How can our institutions begin to combat their built in privileges and racisms and take actual steps towards accountability? Anti-racist policies and active acknowledgement of implicit biases within gender and race are the first necessary step. “
Daría Sól Andrews

During the opening of the exhibition, the curator and two exhibiting artists will be present to talk about their work. On this occasion we will present the work of each exhibiting artist in the Reykjavik City Library Grófin and introduce the various locations at which their work can be experienced during the month long exhibition.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Salad Hilowle is a filmmaker and artist whose practice revolves around identity, memories and place. Hilowle has roots in Somalia and Gävle, resides in Stockholm. Nayab Ikram is a photographer and visual artist from the Aland Islands in Finland, who currently works and lives in Turku. Her project, In Between, examines the feeling of in-betweenship, looking at the symbolic meaning of hair from a historical perspective.

Hugo Llanes´ practice investigates political-social fissures and the aesthetics that erupt from them. His works involve extended painting, site-specific performance and installation. By inquiring about social conditions like migration, exploitation, and decolonized processes of identity and their particularities, he articulates projects of a participatory nature and others of a more contemplative character.

Claire Paugam is a multidisciplinary French artist based in Reykjavík, Iceland who also works in teaching, stage design and curatorial projects. Daría Sól Andrews is an independent curator and arts writer based in Reykjavík, Iceland.
