An Ode – poriferal phases
In her large-scale installations and interventions, artist Anna Rún Tryggvadottir addresses the friction between the natural and the man-made. She questions the possibility of alternative narratives to the prevailing Western notion of human beings governing the natural world. Her works are haptic and textural, inspired by natural operative systems and our relationship with natural formations. For her work, she creates situations in which technologically-driven systems enable and explore the kinetic and cyclical behavior of natural elements.
For ‘An Ode – poriferal phases’, a series of objects consisting of natural and artificial materials are presented as a performative (presence of a) spectrum from lifeless to perished life forms. Whether rocks, found wooden structures or man-made fusions between foam and natural sponges – each element is set in motion mechanically to move in a slowed-down counterclockwise rotation. In contrast to linear movements and time concepts, the rotation involves the past and the future, but insists on the perception of the here and now as a perpetuum. -Nora Mayr 2019

Í verkum sínum skapar hún vélræna umgjörð fyrir hreyfimynstu lífrænna og lífvana efna. Umgjörðin treystir á rafknúna tækni sem viðheldur ferlum á mishægri hreyfingu. Verkin eru efnislegir gjörningar sem endurspegla spurningar um tíma og tímakvarða, og umbreyta sjónarhorni okkar á náttúruna. Í gegnum sviðsett samband hins vélræna og hins náttúrulega rannsakar listamaðurinn möguleika efnisins, og varpar ljósi á samband okkar og við náttúruna sem í fleiri aldir hefur markast af því að skilgreina manneskjuna út fyrir ramma hins náttúrulega.

In her continued work with material performances the artist devises technologically driven systems that facilitate and explore kinetic and cyclical behaviour of natural elements. Chosen materials are located in a perpetual movement or forced into a collaborative gesture with one another. Without a fixed outcome, the process ‘the work’ is never fully predictable or under control. The work engages in a feminist perspective of vulnerability, focusing on processes rather than an end result. Speaking for physical, emotional and material spaces that are somehow in between, undefined, or against a monumental or even singular outcome. She addresses the politics of materials by playing with their properties and agency within a constructed situation. The artist is exploring these points of intersections as metaphors for the constituents of our lives, our connection to nature and the space between nature and the humanly constructed.
