Are you an artist with ideas for lighting art projects in public spaces?
The Public Employment Service Culture Media EURES in
cooperation with the City of Hasselt, Belgium, is inviting you to a
portfolio review in Hasselt, September 20th 2017.
Your portfolio should contain ideas for a lighting art project that can be
integrated in the railway station area in Hasselt in 2018. We are looking for
project ideas with a high social relevance that expand the notion of what public
art entails. You may show existing light art projects or sketch of light art
projects.
The City of Hasselt
Hasselt is a Belgian city and municipality, and the capital of the province of
Limburg. Hasselt has a growing population of 77.000 citizens, is renowned for
fashion and gastronomy, retail and services, a university, a Japanese garden and
with green surroundings.
Hasselt city is growing with new areas and new buildings, and wants to invest in
its railway station neighborhood by integrating lighting art in public space when
the street towards the station is to be renovated (spring 2018).
This street (Bampslaan) is for commuters and tourists the first acquaintance
with the city center and lacks at the moment a sense of hospitality, warmth,
color, but also a sense of security.
The surface of the street will be re-done, with more space for bicycles and
boardwalks, less space for cars and busses (see drawing, grey area). The street
will also get more greenery and street furniture.
The portfolio review
The portfolio review is arranged in order to allow you to display your ideas of
how the city can work with light art.
Up to 12 artists will be selected to participate in the portfolio review.
After the review, the city of Hasselt will offer a sketch commission to selected
artists. A feasible design can result to a project that will be settled in cooperation
with the technical department.
